The upcoming Walkshop is set to take place over the course of five days around Loch Lomond in Scotland from 26 June to 1 July 2025. Here, young people will be trained as multipliers for peace and international conflict prevention through digital auditory teaching/learning materials, learning stations, and discussion sessions on a hike of 58 km in Scotland near the location of some of Britain’s nuclear weapons. Scotland is famous for its unique landscape and endless hiking possibilities. Each stage of the hike has been marked on the map and is detailed below.

Day 1: Arrival Day in Glasgow – 26 June

Participants should arrive by 6 pm at the first accommodation, which is the Youth Hostel Glasgow, to be introduced to other participants and the goals and structure of the Walkshop.

Day 2: Milngavie to Drymen – 27 June

Starting point: The begin of the West Highland Way in Milngavie outside of Glasgow.

Length: 20.4km, 5 hours and 10 minutes (plus breaks)

Ascent: 141m

Notes: The first stage is varied in types of footpaths. One should expect minimal road surface, with lots of forested and gravel paths.

End point: Buchanan Arms & Leisure Club in Drymen

First discussion evening on the topic of nuclear arms control in an increasingly nationalistic world. 

Day 3: Drymen to Balloch – 28 June

Starting point: Buchanan Arms & Leisure Club in Drymen

Length: 16.6km, 4 hours and 5 minutes (plus breaks)

Ascent: 82m

Notes: The first half of the route follows a paved footpath alongside a country road. The second half follows the John Muir Way.

End point: Loch Lomond Hotel, Balloch

Day 4: Balloch to Helensburgh – 29 June

Starting point: Loch Lomond Hotel, Balloch

Length: 12.8km, 3 hours and 30 minutes (plus breaks)

Ascent: 310m

Notes: The first part of the route follows the John Muir Way. The second part of the route follows the Three-Loch Way to Helensburgh. The remainder of the way leads through the city on roads or pedestrian paths.

End point: Travelodge Helensburgh Seafront

Second discussion evening on the topic of nuclear risks for future generations. 

Day 5: Helensburgh to Faslane to Glasgow – 30 June

Starting point: Travelodge Helensburgh Seafront

Length: 8.5km, 2 hours and 5 minutes (plus breaks)

Ascent: 28m

Notes: The path consists of a mix of trail, nature, and asphalt paths, with minimal road sections, although they cannot be completely avoided.

Learning station in Faslane: The group will visit the Peace Camp and speak with activists.

Return to Glasgow: Returning from Faslane to Glasgow is possible with busses or trains. Many busses and trains arrive hourly. The return trip is roughly an hour.

End point: Youth Hostel Glasow

Third discussion evening on the topic of Scotland and the UK’s Role in nuclear security.

Day 6: Departure Day from Glasgow

Participants will give their final feedback and thoughts on the Walkshop in a short discussion after breakfast and then begin their journey home.
